Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Manipulation Under Anesthesia is simply spinal manipulation and mobilization performed in an operating room environment. It is somewhat similar to what is done in our office but with the additional aid of anesthesia. The actual adjustments are very gentle, since there is little or no muscle tension resistance.

The MUA is done in a surgery center as an outpatient procedure. It is usually done 3 days in a row and each procedure usually lasts less than 15 minutes. MUA is not invasive surgery and is not for everyone. In some cases, when traditional “in office” care has been unsuccessful at restoring full spinal function, Dr. Gioia may recommend MUA in order to help resolve more of the patient’s condition and health problems. It is for people who have failed traditional chiropractic care, physical therapy, and/or medical care. Patients who have failed back surgery or want to avoid back surgery are also good candidates for the MUA procedure.

MUA has an 84% success rate. Patients usually experience an immediate increase in range of motion, even though there is usually some temporary muscle tenderness similar to the feeling of just completing an exercise program.

Dr. Gioia is one of only two doctors in McHenry County certified to perform this procedure. Dr. Gioia has seen great results with MUA in the past and considers his success rate to be higher than 84%.
